Nipleden hiking trail
Nipleden is a real gem when it comes to hiking in the High Coast.
It starts at Sollefteå Camping on Risön in central Sollefteå and leads upstream along the beautiful flow of the Ångermanälven River up to Edsbron, where you cross the river and follow it downstream back to the starting point.
It is the impressive "nipor" of the riverbanks that gave the trail its name, and these are both beautiful and very exciting to explore. 20,000 years ago the ice sheet began to melt and 10,000 years ago today's Ångermanland was ice-free. Back then, the area around Nipleden was a bay where the meltwater brought with it large amounts of sand and finer materials.
As the land uplift caused the bay to move further and further east, the river "ate" into the old sedimentary deposits, creating the fascinating 50-meter-high cliffs as they look like today. Large parts of the trail follow the "nipor" and sometimes it is steep and narrow. One of the nicer areas to explore along the trail is the Granvågsniporna at the mouth of the Faxälven River. Here are three fantastic nipor, Borgen, Svalnipan and Rödskäggsnipan.
